Since 1994, Vestergaard and LifeStraw have been honored to partner with The Carter Center in the fight to eradicate Guinea worm disease, a devastating parasitic infection that once afflicted millions of people annually. The collaboration began with a simple but transformative innovation: a mesh filter designed to remove Guinea worm larvae from drinking water. Over the years, this partnership has evolved and deepened, resulting in the distribution of over 40 million LifeStraw Guinea worm filters across endemic regions.

President Carter’s hands-on approach to solving global challenges was evident in his leadership of this initiative. His commitment to eradicating Guinea worm disease brought together governments, organizations, and communities, creating a unified global effort. Thanks to these collaborative efforts, the number of human cases of Guinea worm disease has plummeted—from an estimated 3.5 million in the mid-1980s to just 7 cases globally through mid-November 2024. Notably, the eradication of Guinea worm disease would mark the first time in history that a human disease has been eradicated without the use of a vaccine.
